Dear Prime Minister Boris Johnson,
As individuals whose lives have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, we call on you to use the G7 Presidency to advocate for a People’s Vaccine.
We are:
Carol - a nurse from London who has lost two cousins and an uncle to COVID.
Anne - a breast cancer patient from Scotland who’s been shielding for the last 15 months.
Alka - a healthcare worker in the East Midlands whose father died after contracting COVID in India.
We have all suffered extreme hardship over the last year, and none of us wants to see friends and family in the UK or overseas continue to experience the loss and pain that we have endured.
It is clear that international efforts so far to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines reach everyone who needs them are failing. At the current rate, it will take low income countries 57 years to fully vaccinate their populations.
If we want to scale up vaccine production to make sure that there is enough to go around, we must break drug company patents and ensure that vaccine knowledge is shared so that manufacturers everywhere can dramatically increase production.
That’s why, at the G7 summit, we call on you to support and advocate for the WTO TRIPS waiver on intellectual property rights on COVID-19 health technologies, and the WHO COVID-19 Technology Access Pool.
Please, use your G7 Presidency to call for a People’s Vaccine and bring an end to this pandemic. Otherwise we will see many more people experience the loss and trauma that we have.
Yours,
Carol Webley-Brown
Anne MacLean-Chang
