My name is Andrew and I’m an NHS A&E doctor. As we head into winter, I’m reaching out because I want to speak honestly with you about the threats facing our health service, and why all of us need to act right now.
Over the last decade and a half, £400bn has been stripped from the NHS through cuts and austerity. 100 emergency care units - gone. 25,000 hospital beds - gone.
Every day, me and my colleagues are battling impossible working conditions whilst trying to save lives. It’s no wonder that 40,000 nurses and 20,000 doctors are leaving the NHS every year.
Meanwhile, politicians are holding the door open for profit-making companies to carve away our NHS piece by piece. While we get sick, they get rich.
I mean it sincerely when I say: we are in a war for the future of our NHS. At this critical moment, NHS patients and staff must come together to defend the right to health not just for all of us, but for generations to come.
That's why I am so proud to support the work of Just Treatment, and why today I am urging you to donate whatever you can to their winter fundraising appeal to fund the fightback against the threats facing our NHS. Click below to contribute.
As a doctor who used to live in the US, you know the thing I value most about working in the NHS? I never have to ask my patients for their credit card details or argue with an insurance company.
Because unlike other systems, the NHS is there for all of us - no matter who we are or how much money we have. But this central principle is being eroded every single day, and there are politicians in this country who want to take it away altogether.
I genuinely believe that the NHS is one of the greatest achievements of humankind. In 2010 it was ranked the best healthcare system in the entire world. But 15 years of chronic underfunding and creeping privatisation has left it in a critical condition, and patients are suffering as a result.
If politicians don’t re-invest in healthcare, and if they allow private companies to keep chipping away and extracting ever-growing profits, we risk losing our NHS forever.
Myself and my colleagues are scared about the future, but what gives us hope is people like YOU - the millions of NHS patients who truly understand what’s at stake. I know that if enough of us take action together, we CAN force a change of direction.
That’s why I am supporting Just Treatment’s vital winter fundraising appeal. I know hundreds have already donated - which is so heartwarming. But we need another big push to reach the target. Can you help by chipping in below?
If the NHS was one of my patients, I would say that its vital signs are alarming - but that there is still a chance to save it. Hope is not lost.
Despite the immense challenges, working in the NHS is the honour of my life. I will never give up on fighting to protect the future of our health service - and I know the Just Treatment community won’t either.
Thanks so much for all that you do - and I’m wishing you and your loved ones a happy and peaceful Christmas.
